Clinton likens North Korea to unruly children

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said North Korea should not receive the attention it is seeking through behavior like missile launches and likened Pyongyang's behavior to that of unruly children.

North Korea tested a nuclear device in May and fired seven ballistic missiles earlier this month in defiance of a U.N. resolution.

 

Obama arrives in Ghana on historic Africa trip

President Barack Obama has landed in Ghana on his first trip to sub-Saharan Africa since taking office.

He landed soon after 9pm local time and met a group of dignitaries, led by President John Atta Mills. An ethnic African group danced and banged drums for Obama's arrival.


After travelling to Russia and then Italy for a meeting of major industrial powers, Obama is making the last stop of his overseas trip in Ghana, on Africa's west coast.

Obama will make a speech to lawmakers there and tour an oceanfront fort once used to ship slaves to the Americas.

Bush blocked probe into Afghan prisoner killings

The Bush administration repeatedly sought to block investigations into alleged killings of up to 2,000 Taliban prisoners by a US-backed Afghan warlord in 2001, The New York Times hs reported.

Top US officials discouraged separate probes by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the State Department and the Pentagon into the mass killings because it was conducted by the forces of General Abdul Rashid Dostam, a warlord then on the Central Intelligence Agency's payroll, the Times said on its website
Obama says Taliban pushed back in Afghanistan

US President Barack Obama said US and NATO-led troops had pushed back the Taliban in Afghanistan but he warned that there was still a long, hard campaign ahead.

"We knew that this summer was going to be tough fighting, that there was an interest in the Taliban exerting control. They have, I think, been pushed back but we still have a long way to go. We've got to get through elections.

"We've got a serious fight on our hands and we've got to deal with it smartly but we've got to deal with it effectively," Obama said in an interview with Britain's Sky News on Saturday during his visit to Ghana.

Hezbollah stands ready for new war with Israel: Nasrallah

Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah vowed his Lebanese militant party stands ready to fight a new war with Israel, as the Jewish state readies large-scale military exercises later this month.

"There is a possibility, albeit small, that Israel may be preparing to launch a new surprise war and is readying its people for such an eventuality," Nasrallah said in a televised address.

Obama, Netanyahu bare Iran, Palestinian divides

President Barack Obama held intense first talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that laid bare differing approaches on Iran and the US goal of a Palestinian state.

In blunt comments after talks that stretched past the three-hour mark, Netanyahu offered talks "immediately" with the Palestinians but stopped short of endorsing Obama's call for a two-state solution.

:The vast majority of us would rather have quality time with a loved one on Valentine's Day than an extravagant gift, according to a new poll.

Nearly nine out of 10 people in a relationship said undivided attention would be preferable to an "indulgent gift" on Valentine's Day, according to a telephone survey of 1,017 UK adults.

Men were less materialistic than women, the poll showed, with 91% of men preferring time to a gift compared to 86% of women.
